I DO NOT recommend the use of Shock collars, electronic containment systems, invisible fences, remote training devices, or any similar devices. These devices are used to punish by giving the animal an uncomfortable sensation that can be very PAINFUL. Shock collars have already been banned in Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Many other coutries are working toward banning them.
Shocking a dog is not only inhumane but creates fear and confusion. Dogs that are scared and hurt often associate it with things in their environment such as children, neighbors, and other animals. They don't always understand what the shock was for. Dogs can become fearful, confused and Aggressive.
Dog training should be focused on teaching what you Do Want and creating new behaviors that are appropriate and safe. I train with Postitive reinforcement because IT WORKS!
Many people assume that if a trainer doesn't use force they're an extremist and I assure you that I am not. I have an agricultural background which includes raising and slaughtering animals for meat. I have worked with large dangerous animals for over 20 years and I use positive reinforcement to change their behavior without resorting to harsh punishments.
Don't be fooled by the promise of quick fixes and guarantees given by product reps and installers who call themselves dog trainers. The sad truth is that anyone can call themselves a dog trainer.
Here are some links to give you an idea of what Professional Trainers, Veterinary Behaviorists, and Researchers are saying about the use of electrical shocks.
